What materials can the fiber laser cutting machine cut?

The mainstream of the cutting machine used as the cutting process in the current market is the fiber laser cutting machine. Its wide cutting range, fast cutting speed, good cutting effect, and maintenance-free features are widely used. Especially in the cutting of metal sheet materials, the fiber laser cutting machine has advantages.

What materials can be cut by fiber laser cutting machine:

1. Carbon steel. When the fiber laser cutting machine uses oxygen as the processing gas, the cutting edge will be slightly oxidized. For plates up to 4mm thick, nitrogen can be used as a processing gas for high-pressure cutting. In this case, the cutting edge will not be oxidized. For plates with a thickness of more than 10mm, special plates are used for the laser of the steel plate laser cutting machine and oil is applied to the surface of the workpiece during processing to obtain better results.

2. Copper and brass. Both materials have high reflectivity and very good thermal conductivity. Brass with a thickness of less than 1mm can be cut with nitrogen; copper with a thickness of less than 2mm can be cut, and the processing gas must be oxygen. Copper and brass can only be cut when a "reflective absorption" device is installed on the system. Otherwise the reflection will destroy the optical components.

3. Stainless steel, stainless steel is the most used in various industries. When the fiber laser cutting machine cuts stainless steel, under the condition that the edge oxidation is not affected, nitrogen is used to obtain a non-oxidized and burr-free edge. Coating the oil film on the surface of the board will get better perforation effect without reducing the processing quality.

4. Aluminum. For aluminum fiber laser cutting machines, despite the high reflectivity and thermal conductivity, aluminum materials with a thickness of less than 6 mm can be cut, depending on the alloy type and laser capability. When cutting with oxygen, the cutting surface is rough and hard. When using nitrogen, the cut surface is smooth. Pure aluminum is very difficult to cut because of its high purity. Only when a "reflective absorption" device is installed on the fiber laser cutting machine system can aluminum be cut. Otherwise the reflection will destroy the optical components.

5. Titanium. Titanium sheet is cut with argon and nitrogen as processing gases. Other parameters can refer to nickel-chromium steel.

Fiber laser cutting machine belongs to the category of metal cutting machine, so it can generally only be used to process metal, and cannot process non-metallic materials, such as stone, cloth, leather and other materials. The reason is that the wavelength range of the fiber laser cutting machine is no longer within the absorption range of this type of material, or it is not suitable for absorption and cannot achieve the desired effect.

Secondly, the fiber laser cutting machine can not cut the density board. The fiber laser cutting machine is a hot process. Cutting the density board will cause burning, and the cut edge will burn, which cannot meet the cutting requirements. This type of material is mainly the raw material of fiberboard, wood fiber, plant fiber, and some are artificial board made of urea-formaldehyde resin and adhesive. These types of materials belong to the category of MDF, and it is currently impossible to process them with fiber laser cutting machines. 

There are some highly reflective materials, such as copper and other rare metal materials. Although this type of material can be cut with a fiber laser cutting machine, these materials will reflect because the wavelength of the laser is not within the ideal absorption range of these materials. Part of the energy burns out the protective lens, which is not good for long-term use, and will increase the amount of consumables.
